Half-Day vs Full-Day Dog Sledding in Alaska: Which Should You Book?
If you’re planning a winter trip to Fairbanks, choosing between a half-day and full-day dog sledding tour comes down to how you want to spend your day.
✅ Choose the half-day for a hands-on introduction that fits into a broader Alaska itinerary. ✅ Choose the full-day if you want more time with your team, a longer route, and lunch around a campfire.
At Arctic Dog Adventure Co., both tours let you drive your own team of Siberian Huskies. We’ll teach you what to do before heading out, and your guide will lead the way on their own sled. You don’t need previous mushing experience. You do need to be ready to take an active part in the adventure.

Choose the half-day if you want a meaningful introduction
Our half-day dog sledding tour gives you time to meet your dogs, learn to handle the sled, and head into the hills north of Fairbanks. You’ll practice slowing down, stopping, steering, and helping your team uphill.
This is a good choice if you’re curious about mushing but don’t want to commit your whole day, or if you’re fitting dog sledding between other Fairbanks activities.
Alinne Oliveira shared this about her half-day experience:
We LOVED our adventure with Lisbet! We did a private half day sled tour and learned how to gear up and drive our own team! Lisbet was wonderful with our 8-year old daughter who went with her and was able to safely experience this adventure as well. Her dogs are well taken care of, sweet, and were SUPER excited to take us out. I thought I was going to Fairbanks to see the aurora, but I must say that this was, by far, the best part of our trip. I cannot wait to go back! PS: Yes, it is totally worth the money!!— Alinne Oliveira
Travelling with children? Guests under 18 require a private booking. Contact us before booking to discuss your family’s needs.

Choose the full-day if you want to settle into the trail
Our full-day dog sledding tour gives you more time to practice and travel with your dogs through snowy forest and across ridges. Plus, partway through, we stop for hot drinks and a campfire lunch before heading back onto the trail.
Choose this tour if dog sledding is one of the experiences you’re most looking forward to in Alaska. The extra hours help you become familiar with your sled and team. They also mean longer on your feet and out in the cold, so consider your stamina.
Dom Harness described his full-day tour:
I did a full 1-day tour, and it was an amazing experience. By far one of the most fun and educational things I have ever done. I loved that this was more hands-on as well, and it was awesome to get a much more realistic dog sledding experience compared to a simple ride on a sled.— Dom Harness
Can beginners do either tour?
Yes. We teach beginners on both tours, including how to slow down, stop, and help your dogs uphill.
Both tours require balance, mobility, a firm grip, and physical effort. You can read all about how fit you should be for dog sledding here. Review the fitness check and equipment limits on your chosen tour page before booking.
If someone in your group needs a sled ride or an accommodation, email us to discuss a private tour in advance. Private bookings require payment equivalent to at least four full-price guests.
The same care, whichever day you choose
Our commitment to the dogs is the same on both tours. They live with us from puppyhood through retirement, with year-round nutrition, veterinary care, training, enrichment, and rest. Your booking helps support that whole lifetime. You can read more about how we care for our sled dogs.
We pay our professional guides fairly and teach you to travel respectfully with your team and on the land.
Which should you book?
Our kennel is about 30 minutes from downtown Fairbanks, and transportation is not included. Allow travel time in addition to the tour itself.
