OFF-GRID HOMESTEAD & KENNEL

Off-Grid Kennel & Homestead

When we purchased this property, it was for one key reason: unmatched trail access. Nestled in the hills outside Fairbanks, our location provides world-class dog sledding trails right from our doorstep—a must for training and running sled dogs in winter.

But along with incredible access comes a major challenge: no public utilities. That means no electric grid, no city water, and no conventional plumbing. Everything here had to be set up off-grid from day one.

What “Off-Grid” Really Means in Alaska

Off-grid living isn’t a trendy lifestyle choice here—it’s just a necessity. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Power is generated through a combination of solar panels, a gas generator, and a battery bank that stores energy for daily use.

  • Heat comes from wood and oil burning stoves.

  • Water is hauled from town, 5-100 gallons at a time.

  • We use an outhouse with a foam seat that never feels cold.

  • We bathe in a traditional wood-fired sauna - our bath house.

This kind of setup requires ongoing maintenance, thoughtful planning, and flexibility. There’s no switch to flip when something goes wrong—it’s on us to keep things running.

Designed for Dogs

Our kennel is designed first and foremost for the health, happiness, and safety of our dogs. The property includes:

  • Extensive trail access for daily training runs

  • A large free-run pen where dogs can stretch, play, and socialize

  • A dedicated retirement area for older dogs to enjoy their golden years in comfort

We’re always working to improve the space. In 2025, we’re focusing on major upgrades to the dog yard, including new gravel and fencing to ensure better drainage, cleanliness, and long-term durability.

Why This Matters

Our off-grid setup is more than a behind-the-scenes detail—it reflects our commitment to responsible tourism, animal welfare, and authentic Alaskan adventure.

  • Transparency & Realism: We don’t romanticize the off-grid lifestyle. It’s hard work and constant maintenance, but it allows us to live close to the land and prioritize what matters: our dogs, the environment, and meaningful experiences for our guests.

  • Ethical Dog Care: The kennel is built around the wellbeing of our dogs - every element of the homestead and kennel reflects our belief that working dogs deserve dignity, safety, and love for their entire lives. Read all about how we care for our dogs here.

  • Immersive Experience: When you visit us, you’re not stepping into a polished tourist facility—you’re entering a real working kennel and homestead. Guests often tell us this is what makes their experience unforgettable: the chance to see what life is really like here, and to connect with the land, the dogs, and the people in a genuine, unscripted way.
